Summary

One of the essential themes of the SAFEGROUNDS guidance is the need for systematic comparison of management options for contaminated land, in term of the factors important to site owners or operators and other stakeholders, in which to inform decision making.

This document provides guidance on comparing contaminated land management options but does not cover the decision making step (this can be found in the main SAFEGROUNDS guidance). The guide presents a general approach as well as selected method and discusses how to choose the most appropriate one or given contaminated land situation. The methods presented cover simple to complex situations as rigour, details and stakeholder involvement varies. Worked examples can help to show how to apply the methods.

The guide is primarily aimed to those who have responsibility for developing and applying a process for comparing options for managing contaminated land on nuclear-licensed and defence sites, as well as those who have an interest in options comparison process.
